Many different occasions require a cover letter, including: when submitting resumes, journal or newspaper articles, manuscripts, presentations, proposals, and research papers for example. Writing a cover letter should be customized to the reason you need it.
Most cover letters include the following parts:
- Introduction – the purpose for the letter, why you are applying or what you are submitting, usually one paragraph
- Body – why you should be hired or why your submission should be accepted, usually two or three paragraphs at most
- Closing – a statement of gratitude and a request for contact, usually one paragraph
While most cover letters are only a page, if you have a compelling reason to write, where you want to include more information, you can make the body longer. Make sure you put your information in a logical order.
