Below is a typical dissertation structure, but you will need to follow any instructions given by your department and university. Check the numbers for setting your margins and if you should indent paragraphs. Many schools use right and left margins of 1.25 instead of 1 inch, so please check your school’s rules for setting up your dissertation.

  • Title – centered and in all capital letters

  • Your degrees (BA/BS, MA, MS) – centered, with the name of your university, the city and state of the university the degree was obtained and the year you received your degree – all on different lines and centered

  • Major Field: type in your major field of study
  • Abstract: write a single-spaced paragraph describing your dissertation. It should be limited to no more than 350 words

Table of Contents

  • List your chapters and any subsections with the page numbers where they may be found.

List of Tables

  • List all tables in your study with the page numbers where they may be found.

List of Figures

  • List all figures in your study with the page numbers where they may be found.

Chapters

  • Double-space all text
  • Chapter 1 is where page numbering starts – page 1….
  • Type Chapter 1 – centered
  • Type chapter title – centered
  • Start writing your chapter, including figures and tables as needed
  • Continue to write chapters this way until finished

References

  • You will need to put your references here in the style your program requires. Please see style guide section as needed.

Appendices

  • You use appendices for text, figures, tables that you would like to include for your reader, but they are not included in your chapters.
